LOST IN THE CITY OF DIAMONDS / WEEK IN BELGIUM

13th of July, 2016

Waking up, bright and early, going to the rooftop of my uncle apartment and leaving my phone behind.

Enjoying the sun slowly coming out and shinning uptown Belgium houses at 6 in the morning. Brussels’ starting to wake up. Eventually. Such positive energy circling around my body. Perfect timing to do yoga or meditate. Focus on what’s important in life, away from the materialistic world or toxic people. Every day of my stay in Belgium started so calm and without a rush. This trip was a Christmas presents from my uncle, that lives in Brussels. A week of Western European beauty in Belgium. Full of chocolate and beer.

Later on in that day, I took a lovely and enjoyable, one-hour train ride to Antwerp.

A very cute town with a big trading history from the 16th century on. The largest port for a long time back in a day, famous for its verity of diamonds and fashion houses, regarding the huge trading history of the town. I have to say, that the weather wasn’t truly the highlight of that afternoon in Antwerp. But the thrill kept going, no matter what. Honestly, I got through some really bad weather in the mountains and the worst that can possibly happen if it’s raining in Belgium, is me going to get some hot chocolate and a muffin. In the moments like this, I really couldn’t care less if I was soaking wet or not.

Due to bad cloudy and grey sky,

I decided to visit the museum of mode. Pretty interesting and I would absolutely recommend it. It’s located in the center, pretty close to everything, ask the locals, they don’t bite. Anyways, in the museum, they always keep at least 2 different shows going, and one from a younger,  rising fashion designer.

I ended up my day with an interesting reception, hosted by South Germans (Bavaria). A lot of people from the European Parliament and Germany, typical food, wine and deserts for that area etc.

Again, a lovely one-hour train drive, this time to the other side, West side of Belgium. My first impression was: Oh such a cute house! And the second one was: Beer and chocolate! The real deal, I’m telling you. Welcome to Bruges! These people here are absolutely obsessed with trying new food, especially desserts and chocolate. What is this, heaven or what?! I was meant to be there I swear…  After a couple hours of shows and museums, I decided to sneak into those cute chocolates and beg for free chocolate samples. But honestly, a town itself it’s very touristy, full of shops and little cafeterias… Mixed with endless streets of cute bricked houses, passing by the water houses to the whole thing looks like a little Venice at the end.

Belfort, located in the center is a huge tower, from the 13th century.

A simple Bed&Breakfast comes for 30-50 Eur per night, depends on your location or distance from the center. Besides chocolate houses, as well here, remarks a huge trading past, as of clothing, costumes, dolls.  And if you ever visit Bruges or Belgium in general, you will have to get them waffles, because they’re delicious. And of course, chocolate, I’m marking truffles as my favorite, a little mix between sweet and not so sweet. I don’t think that comment of me gaining weight in Belgium is necessary.

Two days adventures from my week in Belgium, before I had to head back home to Slovenia, spend some time with my mom. On August 5th I was already on my way to Canada.
